Whereas single-motor variants serve as the lower-price base model, these often represent the upgrade. Although EVs with only one front or rear motor typically deliver instant torque in a satisfying, useful way, actual acceleration sometimes isn’t great. So much has changed since then. Amidst shifting consumer sentiments and tariff tumult, Volvo has reneged its goal to become an EV-only automaker. For a moment, it seemed the EX30 might not even make it to the United States, but it finally arrived for model year 2025, trying to find a place among the best compact electric SUVs.

This tiny crossover launched in dual-motor all-wheel-drive specification and at almost $50,000 to start, a price significantly higher than what had initially been indicated. The federal tax incentives going away didn’t help. The EX30 also launched ballistically in MotorTrend testing, using its 422 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque to zing from a stop to 60 mph in just 3.2 seconds—more than enough proof that this little cutie will smoke some purpose-built sports cars on a dragstrip.

<div class="flex relative h-full hover:[&>[data-ids=CardContent]_[data-card-title]]:underline flex-col gap-2″>

For 2026, Volvo introduces the promised sub-$40,000 EX30 (without destination fees—it’s $40,245 with). This entry-level version loses the front motor and is instead powered by a single rear motor that makes 268 hp and 253 lb-ft. These figures seem modest, but in our first drive of the new EX30 Single Motor, it still provides acceleration bordering on preposterous.

Volvo Chose Violence

According to Volvo’s estimates, this EX30 hits 60 mph in 5.1 seconds. That’s doesn’t sound too impressive on paper, but its perceived speed makes it feel quicker than that. Rather than an instant snap when you punch the pedal, acceleration rolls in gradually.

To be clear, we use “gradual” here relative to being completely slammed into the seat: It’s not a sharp sensation of acceleration, but nevertheless it’s almost excessive. It might taper off above highway speeds, but it gets there without hesitation. Choosing the efficiency-focused Range drive mode barely seems to make a difference. The EX30’s minuscule footprint means it doesn’t have a lot of ground to stand on, resulting in some inherent instability and a very lively handling demeanor. Now without a front motor’s pulling and weight, the light steering seems even more fluid and free to dart side to side. The EX30 is still somewhat softly sprung, allowing body roll and reasonable ride comfort. How it all combines belies the adorable looks and gives the car an almost unhinged character.

Even so, the rear-drive powertrain doesn’t turn it into a drift machine. In Volvo’s safety-obsessed way, it refuses to slide more than just a little bit. Even when the stability control is turned off, it’s not really off.

Lifting off the accelerator can bring the EX30 Single Motor to a stop using regenerative braking, but there’s a noticeable, roughly 1-second delay in when that comes on. It happens mostly when releasing the accelerator fully; modulating it makes it less pronounced. But for when regen isn’t enough, the brake pedal works effectively.

<div class="flex relative h-full hover:[&>[data-ids=CardContent]_[data-card-title]]:underline flex-col gap-2″>

Still an EX30—For Better and Worse

Fortunately, losing a motor doesn’t much reduce the EX30’s laugh-inducing driving feel. Sure, it’s not as quick, yet it still seems quicker than it needs to be. Otherwise, it’s much of the EX30 experience we already know.

Size is always a compromise: The EX30’s tininess lets it fit neatly in dense streets but results in a nearly nonexistent backseat. Cargo space is minimal, too. In contrast, there’s ample space up front, all surrounded by interesting design-forward touchpoints and materials.

As we’ve experienced in every EX30, the eye-tracking system makes a mockery of Volvo’s safety focus. It’s deeply ironic to be told to watch the road when attempting to look at the central monolithic touchscreen which contains every readout and function, or while checking a side mirror to ensure the lane is clear before merging over. This implies the safest way to drive the EX30 is to look absolutely nowhere else than the road ahead. The nag can be deactivated each time the vehicle is started.
