If it wasn\u2019t offered in the first-generation G-Wagen, he wouldn\u2019t even consider it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"transition-colors motion-reduce:transition-none typography-body2 md:typography-body1 md:text-neutral-2 dark:md:text-neutral-6 text-neutral-2 dark:text-neutral-6\" data-ids=\"Typography\" data-component=\"TextElement\" data-nitrous-content-readable-section=\"true\">A lot has changed in the last four years, including Levin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"transition-colors motion-reduce:transition-none typography-body2 md:typography-body1 md:text-neutral-2 dark:md:text-neutral-6 text-neutral-2 dark:text-neutral-6\" data-ids=\"Typography\" data-component=\"TextElement\" data-nitrous-content-readable-section=\"true\">This Turbo Wolf, as EMC calls it, features the Mercedes-Benz OM605 turbocharged inline five-cylinder diesel engine. Essentially the same engine as the OM602 originally fitted to the Wolf but with a turbocharger, it\u2019s an engine Levin specifically said he wouldn\u2019t do. What changed? Customer demand.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"transition-colors motion-reduce:transition-none typography-h5 md:typography-h4 md:text-neutral-1 dark:md:text-neutral-8 text-neutral-1 dark:text-neutral-8 -mb-4 md:-mb-6\" data-ids=\"Typography\" data-component=\"HeaderElement\"><strong class=\"font-bold\">What the People Want <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"transition-colors motion-reduce:transition-none typography-body2 md:typography-body1 md:text-neutral-2 dark:md:text-neutral-6 text-neutral-2 dark:text-neutral-6\" data-ids=\"Typography\" data-component=\"TextElement\" data-nitrous-content-readable-section=\"true\">As much as Levin <u class=\"underline\">prefers his Wolves like Mercedes designed them<\/u>, and as much as being abysmally slow is part of their charm, he\u2019s running a business and part of that is responding to market demands. In fact, it feels natural, as if it had come from the factory this way. It\u2019s a wonder Mercedes never offered this engine; it\u2019s such a perfect fit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"transition-colors motion-reduce:transition-none typography-body2 md:typography-body1 md:text-neutral-2 dark:md:text-neutral-6 text-neutral-2 dark:text-neutral-6\" data-ids=\"Typography\" data-component=\"TextElement\" data-nitrous-content-readable-section=\"true\">This wasn\u2019t a one-to-one swap, though. EMC had to build a custom skidplate under the front bumper to protect the intercooler the naturally aspirated original engine didn\u2019t need. A new 3-inch stainless-steel exhaust system had to be designed and fabricated to connect to the turbo rather than the head. In addition, a custom airbox was fitted and a 3D-printed air intake was added to the passenger front fender just below the hood to feed it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"transition-colors motion-reduce:transition-none typography-body2 md:typography-body1 md:text-neutral-2 dark:md:text-neutral-6 text-neutral-2 dark:text-neutral-6\" data-ids=\"Typography\" data-component=\"TextElement\" data-nitrous-content-readable-section=\"true\">It&#8217;s not entirely stock upstream of the turbo, either. EMC has tuned it up to a healthy 225 hp and 300 lb-ft. A modern boost gauge takes the place of a block-off plate between the speedometer and tachometer. The unabashed sloth of the original Wolf is a part of its charm, and we appreciate historical accuracy and preservation as much as anyone. That said, the quoted <em class=\"italic\">23-second<\/em> 0\u201360 mph time and 70-mph top speed, both of which were optimistic, can just as easily been seen as a chore or worse in 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"transition-colors motion-reduce:transition-none typography-body2 md:typography-body1 md:text-neutral-2 dark:md:text-neutral-6 text-neutral-2 dark:text-neutral-6\" data-ids=\"Typography\" data-component=\"TextElement\" data-nitrous-content-readable-section=\"true\">The turbo fixes all that with a little help from the automatic transmission, all without really changing anything else. It\u2019s still a period-correct Mercedes-Benz engine and transmission. It still clatters like a diesel (now with turbo whistle), and it\u2019s still slow by modern standards. It\u2019s just not nearly as slow as before and not slow enough to bother anyone. If anything, we\u2019d call the newfound power and custom transmission tuning appropriate. It\u2019s about as quick as you\u2019d expect a truck like this to be and about as quick as you\u2019d want it to be.<\/p>\n<p class=\"transition-colors motion-reduce:transition-none typography-body2 md:typography-body1 md:text-neutral-2 dark:md:text-neutral-6 text-neutral-2 dark:text-neutral-6\" data-ids=\"Typography\" data-component=\"TextElement\" data-nitrous-content-readable-section=\"true\">After all, it\u2019s still a tall, boxy, military SUV on all-terrain tires. It still has recirculating ball steering, which has thankfully been rebuilt but is still slow. The polyurethane suspension bushings, Eibach springs (with a mild lift), and Bilstein shocks all contribute to improved handling, but this vehicle was never meant for high speeds or aggressive maneuvers. The turbocharger and newer automatic transmission (compared to the rest of the vehicle) just make it more comfortable merging into freeway traffic and climbing hills. The stereo head unit is now an optional touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It drives a new six-speaker Harman Kardon system with subwoofer. The combination cupholders and storage trays ahead of the shifter are now milled out of wood that matches the rest of the interior trim, replacing the old injection-molded plastic EMC used to use. There are heated seats front and rear now, and the aftermarket air conditioning is upgraded to the latest Vintage Air Gen 5 unit.
