The 3-row family SUV has vacillated between a more rugged, body-on-frame design and a softer, unibody construction since its debut in 1985—literally flip-flopping with each successive generation.

The original Pathfinder was initially built off a body-on-frame Nissan truck platform. Then the second-gen 1996 Pathfinder went to unibody. The third-generation Pathfinder that launched in 2004 returned to body-on-frame. Then for the 2013 model year, the Pathfinder returned once again to a unibody platform, one it has remained underpinned by through the fifth-generation version that debuted as a 2022 model. For the next-generation Pathfinder, Nissan has already said it will build it on a new platform that’s—you guessed it—body-on-frame. For the newly updated model, Nissan fixed a few things, added some unique features, new fascias, and a new color: Baltic Teal.

The 3.5-liter V-6 with 284 horsepower and 259 lb-ft of torque powering the Pathfinder remains unchanged—no move to a turbocharged 2.0-liter I-4 like the 2026 Infiniti QX60, yet—with power channeled through the same nine-speed automatic transmission. On premium fuel, the retuned Pathfinder Rock Creek variant we had a chance to take a brief spin in gets a slight power bump to 295 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque.

Smarter Charging

Arguably, the most innovative feature added to the 2026 Pathfinder is Nissan’s new wireless, magnetic fan-cooled charger located in front of the gear shifter. Nissan sees the charger as a game changer. The pad is magnetized to keep a phone firmly in place, and the pull is strong—our iPhone didn’t move at all during our quick test drive. It works on Apple 12 or newer iPhones, as well as Google Pixel phones, which are magnetized. Nissan also says that charging is now three times more powerful than before: 15 watts versus 5 watts with the older charge pads. This is important given that running, say, Google Maps for directions uses about 4 watts of power. The end result is improved power delivery with less overheating issues, making for a better overall user experience.

Rocking Along in the Pathfinder Rock Creek

We had a chance to slide behind the wheel of the 2026 Pathfinder Rock Creek for a short time. Added for the 2024 model year as a tougher looking, slightly more off-road capable option, the Rock Creek has a different grille, additional lower body cladding, rugged rubber floor mats, and a tubular roof rack. While we found the power to be adequate during our brief drive, it wasn’t a neck snapper by any means, and it needed a good stomp on the gas pedal to really get going.

With 7.7 inches of ground clearance, the Rock Creek sits about 0.63 inches higher than other Pathfinders (a Premium in Baltic Teal is pictured); the suspension is tuned for rougher terrain, and the all-terrain tires on 18-inch wheels are a bit wider. We had no chance to gauge its standard all-wheel drive or off-road abilities on our short route. But at speed, the tires seemed to transmit a fair amount of noise into the cabin.

Bigger Screen Now Standard

As part of the 2026 update, Nissan also restyled the Pathfinder’s dashboard to accommodate the now-standard 12.3-inch touchscreen. It’s mounted on the dash and positioned a bit lower, which is good, and some attempts were made to better integrate it. The volume knob sits below the screen with HVAC controls below that, similar to the controls and layout in the Nissan Rogue. One provides 180-degree images to see the front and around the sides of the vehicle to look past parked cars or see out of garage entrances. The second, what Nissan calls the Invisible Hood View, offers a virtual view through the hood and engine bay to position the wheels.
