Nissan does, too. The automaker is proud of the fact it has five vehicles in its lineup that start at well under $30,000, and its newest might be the most compelling on the lot. Priced at $23,645 to start and $29,235 when fully loaded, the cheaper-than-before <u class=\"underline\">2026 Nissan Sentra<\/u> offers tremendous value and style. So what\u2019s the catch? We spent a day behind the wheel of the new Sentra in and around Phoenix, Arizona, looking for one. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div readability=\"138.85761914101\">\n<h2 class=\"transition-colors motion-reduce:transition-none typography-h5 md:typography-h4 md:text-neutral-1 dark:md:text-neutral-8 text-neutral-1 dark:text-neutral-8 -mb-4 md:-mb-6\" data-ids=\"Typography\" data-component=\"HeaderElement\"><strong class=\"font-bold\">What\u2019s New?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"transition-colors motion-reduce:transition-none typography-body2 md:typography-body1 md:text-neutral-2 dark:md:text-neutral-6 text-neutral-2 dark:text-neutral-6\" data-ids=\"Typography\" data-component=\"TextElement\" data-nitrous-content-readable-section=\"true\">In the era of shrinkflation, it\u2019s rare for a product to get an update <em class=\"italic\">and <\/em>get cheaper in the process, but the 2026 Sentra manages to do that by keeping its updates targeted to what Nissan thinks really matters most to its customers: style and technology. Most everything under the skin\u2014save for some stampings and added sound deadening materials\u2014has been carried over from the old Sentra with little more than tuning changes to the suspension and steering rack. <\/p>\n<p class=\"transition-colors motion-reduce:transition-none typography-body2 md:typography-body1 md:text-neutral-2 dark:md:text-neutral-6 text-neutral-2 dark:text-neutral-6\" data-ids=\"Typography\" data-component=\"TextElement\" data-nitrous-content-readable-section=\"true\">Power is sent to the front wheels by a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter I-4 making 149 hp and 146 lb-ft of torque, mated to a CVT retuned for smoother response and more natural feel, meaning it shouldn\u2019t \u201crubber-band\u201d under acceleration and should behave more like a conventional automatic. <\/p>\n<p class=\"transition-colors motion-reduce:transition-none typography-body2 md:typography-body1 md:text-neutral-2 dark:md:text-neutral-6 text-neutral-2 dark:text-neutral-6\" data-ids=\"Typography\" data-component=\"TextElement\" data-nitrous-content-readable-section=\"true\">Fuel economy figures vary depending on whether you get a Sentra S or SV, which ride on 16-inch wheels, or an SL with 17-inch wheels, or an SR with 18s. Federal results are pending, but Nissan estimates the S and SV will achieve 30\/38\/33 mpg city\/highway\/combined and the SL and SR will return 29\/36\/32 mpg. It looks bigger and wider than it is, with the swept roofline and ducktail spoiler helping make the Sentra also <u class=\"underline\">appear sportier than it is<\/u>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"transition-colors motion-reduce:transition-none typography-body2 md:typography-body1 md:text-neutral-2 dark:md:text-neutral-6 text-neutral-2 dark:text-neutral-6\" data-ids=\"Typography\" data-component=\"TextElement\" data-nitrous-content-readable-section=\"true\">That\u2019s probably for the best, as Nissan\u2019s goal for the new Sentra was to bridge a wide spectrum of multigenerational buyers looking for an affordable, practical car. It rides quite comfortably, even on the larger wheel package of our Sentra SR test car. It has confidence-inspiring brakes, and it also steers relatively well, with good on-center feel and an acceptable amount of feedback from the front tires when cornering. <\/p>\n<p class=\"transition-colors motion-reduce:transition-none typography-body2 md:typography-body1 md:text-neutral-2 dark:md:text-neutral-6 text-neutral-2 dark:text-neutral-6\" data-ids=\"Typography\" data-component=\"TextElement\" data-nitrous-content-readable-section=\"true\">The largely carryover powertrain is smoother and slightly quieter than it was on the last Sentra (and indeed some rival offerings), but it remains the weakest point of the new Sentra. At city speeds, the Sentra accelerates adequately, with the transmission doing a good job of keeping the engine in its powerband and faking shifts unobtrusively. <\/p>\n<p class=\"transition-colors motion-reduce:transition-none typography-body2 md:typography-body1 md:text-neutral-2 dark:md:text-neutral-6 text-neutral-2 dark:text-neutral-6\" data-ids=\"Typography\" data-component=\"TextElement\" data-nitrous-content-readable-section=\"true\">When more acceleration is required, such as when merging onto a freeway or passing slower traffic, the Sentra\u2019s lack of power rears its head. From a stop, the engine races and the transmission pins it near redline, yet the acceleration is akin only to a gentle shove. At least the standard radar cruise control system and available Pro Pilot Assist take a lot of the stress and monotony out of commutes and road trips. <\/p>\n<p class=\"transition-colors motion-reduce:transition-none typography-body2 md:typography-body1 md:text-neutral-2 dark:md:text-neutral-6 text-neutral-2 dark:text-neutral-6\" data-ids=\"Typography\" data-component=\"TextElement\" data-nitrous-content-readable-section=\"true\">And the interior is at least a nice place to spend some time. Styled much like the <u class=\"underline\">new Leaf\u2019s cabin<\/u>, the Sentra has a stylish two-spoke steering wheel, intuitive and legible displays, and an aesthetically and texturally pleasing design for the price point. The seats themselves are comfortable and supportive, and the back seat is among the more spacious offerings in the class\u2014although taller occupants will note pinched head- and kneeroom. <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"transition-colors motion-reduce:transition-none typography-h5 md:typography-h4 md:text-neutral-1 dark:md:text-neutral-8 text-neutral-1 dark:text-neutral-8 -mb-4 md:-mb-6\" data-ids=\"Typography\" data-component=\"HeaderElement\"><strong class=\"font-bold\">What\u2019s the Catch? Is the New Sentra Worth It?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"transition-colors motion-reduce:transition-none typography-body2 md:typography-body1 md:text-neutral-2 dark:md:text-neutral-6 text-neutral-2 dark:text-neutral-6\" data-ids=\"Typography\" data-component=\"TextElement\" data-nitrous-content-readable-section=\"true\">The 2026 Sentra manages the difficult balance of standing out in an increasingly crowded field. For budget-minded shoppers, the Sentra\u2019s foibles\u2014slow acceleration and lower fuel economy than gas (and hybrid) competitors\u2014might well be overlooked in favor of the lovely cabin, nice ride, and loads of contemporary technology.
