Few vehicles balance daily usability and driver engagement better than a sport sedan. More useful than coupes yet less bulky than SUVs, high-performance four-doors mix practicality and dynamism to satisfy the hearts and minds of those who love to drive.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

A new entrant is virtually revving up to join this star-studded category: the 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 6 N<\/u><\/u>. It\u2019s a riotously fun and focused model that\u2019s been developed to rival icons from Europe, Japan, and the United States\u2014that is, if you gas-huffing purists would just look past the plug.<\/p>\n

Having now driven the Ioniq 6 N on the road and at a racetrack, take it from us: You\u2019ll want to.<\/p>\n

Increasing N-Gagement<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Once a bit frumpy<\/u><\/u>, the Hyundai Ioniq 6 lineup as a whole gains a bold countenance in its 2026 update. The new look nearly transforms this EV, as its once wide-eyed headlights narrow to an LED-accented glower<\/u><\/u>. Below, the grille opens into a performance-implying maw that\u2019s showcased on the new N Line trim, which is essentially a styling package. The Ioniq 6 N (no Line) cranks up the visual aggression further\u2014but more than just looking fast, it\u2019s been modified extensively to go fast, too.<\/p>\n

Much of the 6 N\u2019s high-performance engineering is cribbed from the already stupendous Ioniq 5 N SUV, which arrived for the 2025 model year and quickly started breaking performance records<\/u><\/u>, winning comparison tests<\/u><\/u>, earning tech accolades<\/u><\/u>, and generally providing nothing less than glee<\/u><\/u> to everyone at MotorTrend <\/em>lucky enough to drive it.<\/p>\n

Primary among those mechanicals is the dual-motor powertrain, which delivers 641 hp and 568 lb-ft of torque in short bursts (it\u2019s rated at 601 hp and 545 lb-ft most of the time). Traction at the rear is optimized by an electronically controlled limited-slip differential. But don’t think for even as long as it takes to sprint to 60 mph\u2014likely less than 3.0 seconds\u2014that the Ioniq 6 N is just an electric muscle car<\/u><\/u>. Its chassis has been thoroughly revised with adaptive suspension dampers, hydraulic bushings, and additional structural adhesive to increase feel and precision. Bespoke wheels spin beneath its widened body, and appropriately big brakes haul it down.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t think, either, that the Ioniq 6 N is merely a sedan-ified Ioniq 5 N. Compared to its crossover counterpart, the 6 N has bracing struts between the trunk and back seats to increase torsional rigidity. Although ground clearance is identical between the two, the 6 N\u2019s shorter height contributes to a roll center some 4 inches below that of the 5 N. There\u2019s also the swan-neck rear wing, which the 5 N lacks; it can push more than 200 pounds of downforce at a top speed of about 160 mph.<\/p>\n

Hyundai says it attempted to give the 6 N a different character than the 5 N: less wild and playful, more grip-oriented for added control and precision on track and off. A configurable drift mode<\/u><\/u> in the 6 N ensures things will never be too stoic if you so desire\u2014as if that could possibly be a concern for a vehicle so inherently spirited as this.<\/p>\n

N-dless Choices<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Sports cars were once simple machines, their dynamic breadth defined by hardware. No more. Of course, metal still matters greatly, but now, endless reams of software code are often just as vital if not more so to shaping a car\u2019s tangible properties.<\/p>\n

In the Ioniq 6 N, that tech can sometimes feel overwhelming. There are so many settings: multiple levels for motor response, steering weight, suspension firmness, differential behavior, and stability control leniency. Each can be tuned independently. That\u2019s even before you get to N Torque Distribution or N Pedal, which lets you adjust torque balance and regenerative braking strength.<\/p>\n

While there\u2019s theoretically a finite number of configuration possibilities, it\u2019d take a lot more time than we had to find the perfect one. That\u2019s of little concern, though, since the Ioniq 6 N is so fun regardless of how it\u2019s set up (OK, maybe not Eco mode).<\/p>\n

Running as the EV it is, torque arrives instantly and power sustains up to high speeds; the straight between Turns 3 and 4 of the Korea International Circuit we had the pleasure of attacking in the 6 N wasn\u2019t long enough to exhaust it. Like with any EV on Hyundai\u2019s now ubiquitous E-GMP platform underpinnings, the acute regenerative braking capability allows for a satisfying flow between curves by simply modulating the accelerator.<\/p>\n

Like the Ioniq 5 N, though, the 6 N offers an amazing trick: imitating a combustion car<\/u><\/u>. Press a button, and the motors recalibrate to feel like an engine, with a surge that rises across a defined powerband. A tachometer appears, and the steering wheel’s paddle shifters now change virtual gears that dictate how acceleration is delivered. Don\u2019t upshift, and it\u2019ll bounce off a synthetic rev limiter; don\u2019t downshift, and it\u2019ll lug. It\u2019ll even deny downshifts at high rpm, lest you over-rev the engine it doesn\u2019t have.<\/p>\n

Hyundai programmed the 6 N\u2019s \u201ctransmission\u201d to have tighter gear spacing than the 5 N. The effect is of a close-ratio eight-speed box that encourages constant paddle slapping. It\u2019s all optionally accompanied by one of three digital exhaust notes, adding an audible reference point to promote focus on the road as it rushes toward you.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s uncannily good and fantastically fun. Even so, this delightful gimmick raises philosophical questions about what the Ioniq 6 N (and the 5 N for that matter) is trying to be, why it tries to fake being something it\u2019s not. Other electric sport sedans achieve greatness<\/u><\/u> without such tricks. That said, if you want, you can turn it all off and still have a heck of a time. Focusing on the 6 N experience itself, perhaps the only thing missing is enginelike vibration to accompany the sound and feel, which would make it all even more convincing.<\/p>\n

Another dynamic blemish is the brake pedal. It provides strong and progressive stopping power but not a ton of feel; a sensation of pads biting into rotors isn\u2019t really there. In addition, the vehicle-specific Pirelli P Zero Elect tires are up to the task on the road but went somewhat greasy on us after a few hot laps on track. Real hardcore track work would probably mean fitting it with more appropriate tires.<\/p>\n

N-demic Issues<\/strong><\/h2>\n

How that rubber gets worked relates to the 6 N\u2019s weight, likely slightly less than the 5 N but still hefty at around 4,600 pounds. The car hides it well, changing direction eagerly as its adaptive suspension dampers do an excellent job of eliminating the more pronounced body motions that can affect the standard Ioniq 6. Poise is the predominant handling sensation, even as it rides with a firmness appropriate for a performance car.<\/p>\n

Range is the Ioniq 6 N\u2019s main compromise. Expect better than the 224 miles we recorded in the Ioniq 5 N, perhaps coming closer to Hyundai\u2019s claimed 240-mile estimate but still short of ideal for long-distance trips. Driving flat out at the Korea International Circuit, we watched the 84.0-kWh battery\u2019s state of charge plummet lap by lap, accompanied by a drop in power as the laps piled up.<\/p>\n

Recharging performance is less of a concern. E-GMP vehicles are known for how quickly they gain electrons<\/u><\/u>\u2014given your favorite canyon road or local racetrack has a fast charger nearby.<\/p>\n

Another N-ockout <\/strong><\/h2>\n

These issues aren\u2019t specific to the Ioniq 6 N; they\u2019re endemic to battery-powered vehicles. Where the 6 N separates itself from other EVs is with the endless entertainment it provides, not only through superb engagement but also by numerical performance that\u2019ll wallop some of the most celebrated gas-powered sport sedans out there\u2014we can\u2019t wait to get it in for testing.<\/p>\n

According to Hyundai, the car will be available in \u201climited quantities\u201d in the United States; what exactly that means is yet unclear. Anyone with a sense for today\u2019s automotive industry can surmise that the inane resistance that EVs still face is a factor, as well as potential tariff issues given that the 6 N is produced in Korea. If any of those anyones also have a sense for what makes a great sport sedan, they\u2019ll know the spicy Ioniq 6 N is built to take on the world\u2019s best.<\/p>\n
