      We live in a world where Kia now asks almost $42,000 for an electric-assisted Sportage, one of its smallest SUVs<\/u>. For perspective\u2014and to shake our collective fists at the sky\u2014this is a model that only 10 years ago started below $23,000.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

      But that was without this version\u2019s hybrid powertrain and before a mountain of safety and driver assist features invaded this space (and inflation added $8K). Perhaps more important, that big price tag is assigned to the SX Prestige Sportage Hybrid trim, which is the top offering in the Sportage Hybrid lineup. The entry-level Sportage Hybrid, the LX, starts below $32,000, which, through the lens of 10-year-old Kia SUVs, makes this SUV look like a reasonable value.<\/p>\n

      And that was before we drove it.<\/p>\n

      The Sportage Hybrid is the middleman in the Sportage line, sitting price-wise between the non-hybrid model and the more expensive and more powerful plug-in hybrid version. But at $41,985, this top-shelf version is one of the most expensive among compact hybrid SUVs<\/u>.<\/p>\n

      Efficiency Without Compromise<\/strong><\/h2>\n

      Perhaps the greatest strength of this SUV is that the efficiency benefits of its electrified powertrain occur without some of the downsides we\u2019ve come to expect with hybrids. Namely, there is no CVT. Rather, torque is directed to all four wheels\u2014all-wheel drive is standard on all but the base Sportage Hybrid\u2014via a conventional six-speed automatic.<\/p>\n

      As a result, when you stand on it, it goes. There\u2019s a distinct lack of wind-up in the powertrain, and the annoying high-rpm yowl accompanying many CVTs doesn\u2019t exist. Instead, the Sportage snaps through gears rapidly and with extra control afforded by steering-wheel-mounted paddles.<\/p>\n

      Motivation comes from a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and two electric motors good for a combined 232 horsepower. The gas engine operates happily on 87-octane fuel, too.<\/p>\n

      Acceleration is on par for the segment with a 0\u201360 time of 7.3 seconds, quick enough to get to you on the freeway safely. That time falls right between rivals like the 2025 Mazda CX-50 Hybrid (7.6) and the all-new 2026 Toyota RAV4 Limited hybrid (7.0), which is also a hybrid.<\/p>\n

      The Sportage holds promise from behind the wheel. Its just-right spring rates and ample roll control make it dynamically interesting if not actually involving. Around our figure-eight course it produced a 27.8-second time at a 0.63 g average, 0.2 second behind the class-topping CX-50 and the 2026 Toyota RAV4.<\/p>\n

      Braking was also about average for the segment. Toyo all-season rubber delivered a stopping distance from 60 mph of 124 feet, which is longer than a Mazda CX-50 but matches the RAV4. Brake feel is nothing special, but composure is good during a full ABS stop, which inspires confidence.<\/p>\n

      Thankfully, ride quality does not suffer from the peppy handling. Although the Sportage doesn\u2019t glide unimpeded over road imperfections, its ride is cushy enough to be comfortable every day. Three drive modes\u2014Eco, Sport, and a customizable My Drive setting\u2014make quick preset changes to throttle, transmission, and steering assist calibrations, helping the Sportage suit your mood. There are also three terrain modes (Snow, Mud, and Sand) that in theory calibrate the Sportage for those conditions.<\/p>\n

      Big Comfort, Reasonable MPG<\/strong><\/h2>\n

      But ultimately, most people buy small SUVs for their utility and daily practicality, and that\u2019s where the Sportage Hybrid shines. Its interior suffers no significant compromises from hybrid battery packaging. Passenger and cargo space are where the Sportage still manages to beat most competitors. In fact, with a maximum cargo space of 73.7 cubic feet (just 0.4 less than in the gas-only model), the Sportage Hybrid outpaces competitors like the Honda CR-V Hybrid (71.8) and far exceeds the Mazda CX-50 Hybrid (56.3).<\/p>\n

      The same is true for rear legroom, which is identical to the non-hybrid Sportage. Preserving passenger and cargo space in a hybrid is rare, folks. And hard to engineer. And Kia deserves credit for making a hybrid SUV that comes with almost no space compromise relative to its conventionally powered counterpart.<\/p>\n

      But there is at least one compromise that matters. The EPA rates this all-wheel-drive Sportage Hybrid at 35 mpg combined, a full 9 mpg better than its non-hybrid equivalent. But that number falls short of nearly every other compact hybrid SUV with all-wheel drive. Mazda\u2019s more entertaining but smaller CX-50 earns 38 mpg combined. Honda\u2019s electrified CR-V achieves a 37-mpg rating. And even Ford\u2019s aging Escape Hybrid gets 39 mpg.<\/p>\n

      Kia asks for a $4,100 premium for the hybrid Sportage over the gas-only SUV\u2019s 2.5-liter four-cylinder powertrain. Assuming normal use and relative gas-price stability, it\u2019ll take 11 years to make up that premium in fuel cost savings, so if you plan to hold onto your Sportage for that long\u2014a timeframe that just exceeds the expiration of its powertrain and battery warranties\u2014breaking even is in the cards.<\/p>\n

      Tech Included<\/strong><\/h2>\n

      A large 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen coupled to an equally large digital instrument cluster dominates the dash space. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, as is a head-up display.<\/p>\n

      And there is a huge pile of driver assist features. Adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, lane departure warning and lane keeping assist, and blind-spot warning are all standard on every Sportage Hybrid. And Kia\u2019s Highway Driving Assist 2 system combines these to ease highway driving.<\/p>\n

      Our SX Prestige trim also included a 360-degree camera and blind-spot intervention. Plus, there are heated and ventilated front seats, heated outboard rear seats, and a heated steering wheel. It\u2019s really these last few features that Kia is counting on to swing buyers to the Sportage Hybrid over, say, a Honda CR-V Sport Touring, which costs only a few hundred dollars more, gets better fuel economy, and drives like a Honda.<\/p>\n

      Possibly the value case for this Sportage is weakening relative to past Kia SUVs, which made a stronger argument through a more competitive feature set or lower price. You\u2019re still getting more for the money here than you would in the Japanese competition, but Kia seems to be leaning more heavily into its recent successes and less into pure value to sway buyers. And that\u2019s not a bad thing because the Sportage is also a good vehicle.<\/p>\n

      Is it better than a RAV4 or CR-V? That depends on what you\u2019re after. We\u2019ll let you decide.<\/p>\n
