Sports Car Center Console

The EX30’s two-tiered center console might be our favorite design element of the cabin. It reminds us a little of the inventive consoles we’ve seen in small sports cars over the years.

The upper tier is outfitted with a retractable cubby that can be used as a cupholder with another, separate retractable cover. At the front of the inner armrest are driver- and passenger-side window toggles, with a switch in between that operates the rear windows with the same toggles. Back-seat passengers can access their window switches from the rear of the center console. It’s a clever, unconventional approach. Our only minor complaint is the shiny black trim around the switches quickly gets covered in fingerprints.

More space is available on the long and narrow lower tier, which features a split-cover false floor that reveals more space and a pair of USB-C ports. The area is only big enough for several phone-sized objects, but we like the convenience of being able to conceal whatever is down there.

Just ahead of this cubby is the EX30’s wireless phone charger. It has a unique rubber holder that prevents the phone from sliding around by effectively pinning it down. The holder is wide enough for two phones but only the driver’s side half has the charging pad. Finally, the rear of the center console offers another useful small drawer for rear-seat passenger storage.

Doors and Décor

Volvo got creative with the EX30’s doors, as well. The inner panels are sculpted so the armrests look like they’re floating. The 3D doors also feature pockets and slim door levers that look very elegant.

A sign inside the liftgate asks “Will It Fit?” next to icons of cargo like a baby stroller, golf clubs, even a scuba tank. Volvo knows how to be cute about its minuscule electric SUV.

High on Personality

The EX30 is easily one of the smallest SUVs we’ve encountered, and space inside is commensurately limited. With so many functions funneled through the touchscreen, that could mean a relatively steep learning curve, although owners will surely get used to things.

Volvo’s packaging of the EX30 is quite good, making great use of the available cargo space. What’s more, the styling is interesting and delightful. While some general aspects can be reminiscent of other EVs, the EX30 is distinctively Volvo overall.
